Edmonton Hydrovac & Airvac Excavation

Home | Vacuum Truck Services | Hydrovac & Airvac Excavation

Hydrovac and Airvac excavators can be compared easily on the surface.  They both provide the same outcome - a safely exposed excavation that causes no damage to underground utilities or the environment.  However, each excavator has many unique traits that will ultimately determine which is the best fit for our client's project.

The Hydrovac and Airvac excavators are perfectly suited to tackle the following jobs with ease:

  • Buried utility location and exposure
  • Pile hole excavation
  • Slot trenching
  • Culvert, ditch, and manhole cleaning
  • Spill cleanup
  • Pipeline excavation
  • Daylighting

Hydrovac

Non-destructive excavation to safely expose underground utilities with high-pressure water.

Hydrovac excavation, also commonly known as daylighting,  uses a high-pressure water stream to break apart soils which are vacuumed up into a vacuum unit. This process allows for safe excavation of soils around any given underground utility without causing damage. The resulting slurry can be disposed of on-site or at a waste disposal facility. Hydrovac trucks can operate year-round since the high pressure water is capable of high temperature water as well as steam.

Airvac

Non-destructive excavation to safely expose underground utilities with high-pressure air (NO water).

Air vacuum excavation (pneumatic excavation) is the latest technology to take hydrovac capability to the next level.  This process still uses vacuum hoses and booms to remove the debris but uses pressurized air instead of water to accomplish the excavation.

The dryvac excavation process is simple but the results are impressive.  Since the process utilizes air to break apart the soil, the removed material is dry and can be dumped easily wherever necessary for quick backfill of the excavation or nearby onsite for later removal with less expensive equipment.

Air-Vacuum Excavation Demonstration, Edmonton, Alberta - May 2016

Air Vacuum excavation means no water and no mess

  • Excavated material is removed dry, leaving the excavated hole completely clean to allow workers a safer work area free of slip and fall accidents from mud contamination
  • The airvac unit can safely dump the excavated soil cleanly on site
  • Excavated material can be easily deposited back into the excavated hole and tamped, removing the need for water trucks and additional offsite disposal fees
